Cat owners want the best for their feline companions, and industry professionals are increasingly developing raw format products to meet surging consumer demand. But what does the science actually say?

Protein and Amino Acid Metabolism

Cats have persistently high hepatic transaminase activity, meaning they continuously catabolize amino acids for energy, even during periods of low dietary protein intake. They have an absolute dietary requirement for taurine, absent in plant foods, and arginine. Deficiencies of either can cause serious, potentially fatal conditions including dilated cardiomyopathy and hyperammonemia.

Arachidonic Acid and Fat Metabolism

Cats cannot synthesize adequate arachidonic acid from linoleic acid due to limited delta-6-desaturase activity. This fatty acid, found only in animal tissue, is essential for immune function, reproduction, and inflammatory regulation.

Vitamin A and Niacin

Cats cannot convert beta-carotene, a plant derived compound, into vitamin A, and cannot synthesize sufficient niacin from tryptophan. Both must come from animal origin foods, another reason raw, meat forward diets align closely with feline biology.

Carbohydrate Metabolism

Cats have low salivary and intestinal amylase activity, limiting starch digestion. Chronically high carbohydrate intake has been associated with obesity, diabetes mellitus, and inflammatory bowel conditions in cats. Raw diets are characteristically low in carbohydrates.


Potential Benefits of Raw Cat Food
A growing body of research and clinical observation supports several potential advantages, though many studies are limited in scale or rely on owner-reported data.

Improved Digestibility

Raw meat proteins have shown higher apparent digestibility compared to heat-processed equivalents in some studies. The Maillard reaction during cooking can reduce the bioavailability of certain amino acids, including lysine.

Healthier Coat and Skin

The higher moisture content of raw diets and the presence of intact fatty acids are commonly associated with improved skin barrier function and coat quality.

Better Hydration

Cats have a naturally low thirst drive. Dry kibble contains only 8 to 10 percent moisture, while raw diets mirror the roughly 70 percent moisture content of whole prey.

Leaner Body Condition

Raw and fresh diets are typically higher in protein and fat with minimal carbohydrates, a macronutrient profile that may support lean muscle mass and reduce adiposity.

Dental Health

Whole raw meaty bones and connective tissue provide mechanical abrasive action that may reduce plaque and tartar. This benefit is most relevant in whole-prey or large-format raw diets.

The Real Risks of Raw Cat Food

Pathogen Contamination
This is the most significant and well-documented risk. Studies have consistently detected Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli, and Campylobacter in commercially available raw pet foods. A 2012 FDA study found 15 percent of raw pet food samples tested positive for Salmonella and 32 percent for Listeria. The risk to immunocompromised humans sharing a household with a raw-fed pet is real.
Nutritional Imbalance
Perhaps the most underappreciated risk, particularly with homemade raw diets. Studies analyzing homemade raw recipes have found widespread deficiencies and excesses, most commonly in calcium, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin D, and iodine. Even well-intentioned recipes frequently fail to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles.
Bone Hazards
Whole or large bone fragments in raw diets can cause gastrointestinal perforations, fractured teeth, and obstruction. This risk is most pronounced with weight-bearing bones and poultry bones that splinter unpredictably. Ground bone in commercially prepared raw foods is generally considered safe.
Parasites
Raw fish and some raw meats can contain viable parasites including Toxoplasma gondii, of particular concern in cats, Trichinella, and Sarcocystis. Freezing at negative 20 degrees Celsius for at least 7 days kills most, but not all, parasites.
Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
A 2018 study identified antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including MRSA and ESBL-producing organisms, in commercially available raw pet foods across Europe and North America, raising public health concerns beyond the household level.
Risk vs. Benefit Framework Risk is not a reason to dismiss raw feeding — it is a reason to approach it with informed rigor. The risks associated with improperly formulated or handled raw food are real; the risks of a properly formulated, high-quality commercial raw diet from a reputable manufacturer are substantially lower.

What the Veterinary Community Says

Major organizations advise caution, primarily due to pathogen risk, not a claim that raw diets are nutritionally inferior.

The American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association have issued statements advising against raw meat-based diets, citing pathogen risks to pets and humans.

Many veterinary nutritionists and integrative vets take a more nuanced stance, acknowledging that commercially prepared, properly formulated raw diets from reputable manufacturers represent a different risk profile than homemade raw feeding. As high-pressure processing, freeze-drying technology, and rigorous third-party testing become more widespread, the gap between institutional caution and practical safety continues to narrow.


Evaluating Raw Cat Food Quality
Not all raw cat foods are created equal. Here is what to look for.

For Commercial Products

  • A complete and balanced AAFCO or FEDIAF statement, ideally backed by feeding trials
  • Pathogen reduction technology such as high pressure processing or validated kill-step protocols
  • Sourcing transparency, with human grade or CFIA/USDA inspected ingredients
  • Third-party batch testing for Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli
  • Formulation by an ACVN board certified or MSc/PhD level nutritionist

For Industry Professionals

  • Compliance with AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles or FEDIAF guidelines across all life stages
  • Special attention to taurine levels, since raw fish and certain proteins can contain taurine-degrading bacteria
  • Shelf-life stability testing for freeze-dried formats, since lipid oxidation is a real concern
  • Validated bone particle size in ground products, typically under 2mm

Recommendation From a Pet Nutritionist

The biology is compelling. Cats are obligate carnivores, and a diet built around high quality, animal sourced proteins and fats is fundamentally aligned with their evolutionary design. But I have also reviewed homemade raw recipes that are seriously deficient in calcium, zinc, or vitamin D, or dangerously excessive in vitamin A from organ-heavy formulations. The risks are real, and I will not minimize them to make raw feeding sound simpler than it is.

Use a commercially prepared product with an AAFCO complete and balanced statement, formulated by a credentialed nutritionist. If you want homemade, work one-on-one with a qualified nutritionist rather than a generic online recipe, and always follow safe food handling practices.

The raw cat food market has real opportunity and real responsibility. Brands that earn lasting consumer trust invest in rigorous formulation, validated safety protocols, transparent labeling, and third-party testing.

Transitioning a Cat to a Raw Diet
Cats are notoriously food imprinted, so a gradual transition is essential to avoid GI upset or outright food refusal.
